Welfare agency Centrelink received 118,491 calls over the 2005-06 financial year reporting suspected welfare fraud worth $125 million.
The inundation of tip-offs has led to almost 60,000 investigations nationwide. One case in Western Australia involved a couple who continued to claim Centrelink payments after winning $800,000 Lotto.
Human Services Minister Joe Hockey says the Support the System that Supports You and Fraud Tip-Off Line campaigns, which were launched last year, were major factors in encouraging the public to report cheats. "Tip-offs are an important part of Centrelink's compliance activity and the investigation of public information builds community confidence in the integrity of the social security system."
