First Source call centre blocked by activists

Indian activists disputing a regional water allowance have attacked a First Source contact center after it breached a 12 hour "shutdown" imposed on Bangalore businesses.

About 40 to 50 activists of the Kannada Rakshane Vedike (KRV) group, armed with heavy sticks, barged into the office in the pre-dawn raid and shut down the operations, according to local media. "The activists forced the subsidiary to shut the office and ordered the skeletal staff to leave the premises," police told reporters. "They also deflated the taxis engaged by the firm to ferry its employees and castigated the drivers for being on duty." The KRV is protesting the division of water allocations from the Cauvery river.

KRV leader Praveen Shetty told reporters that a majority of IT firms and offices had declared a holiday in view of the shutdown and decided to compensate by working on a weekend later. "Some, however, ignored the strike call . . . showing scant regard to the cause of our farmers, people and resources," Shetty said
